Suspenseful Seven Sentence Sunday
Day light savings today. Did everyone remember the set their clocks back? I admit, I didn’t remember until I noticed that clock on my phone and computer didn’t match any of the other clocks in my house. Now, I feel like I’m an hour behind everything I’m supposed to be doing. I don’t care for it.
But I digress. It’s Suspenseful Seven Sentence Sunday. I realize I missed last Sunday, but I had friends come to stay with me last weekend. I should probably plan ahead for stuff like this, but I didn’t. Sorry.
So today’s seven comes from The Devil’s Eye, which I’m working hard on the rewrites for. And so far, I’m quite pleased with.
The rubber soles of his shoes slipped on the wet leaves and moss, the sharp slope and his speed pulling him forward. He fell face first, slapping hard against the lumpy ground. The air rushed from his lungs in a whoosh. He threw his hands forward to protect his face and head. Something sharp jabbed his hip, but the stabbing pain barely registered as he slid down the rest of the hill. When he finally rolled to a stop, his gaze locked on glazed eyes in a bloated, dirty face.
He screamed and scrambled back, unable to look away from the dead man staring back at him.

Sometimes You Just Gotta Go With the Muse
So, I started the new WIP on the weekend–just as I planned–but a funny thing happened when I sat down to write. I just stared at the blank page. The story I had planned to write was not coming to me at all.
Now, having finally wrapped up the first draft for The Devil’s Eye, I should be working on the sequel. But here’s my problem. That’s not the story Muse is whispering in my ear. Instead, two new characters are vying for my attention, happily telling me all about themselves. Images for scenes throughout the story are popping into my head. My desk is currently covered in yellow Post-It notes.
So, I thought maybe I’ll just write the opening scene. Well, one scene lead to another, which lead to another, and, well, you know how it goes. Now, I’m 10k in and I’m probably going to write another 1,000 words when I finish this. Honestly, I feel like if I didn’t have to sleep or eat, I could write the entire thing in one sitting.
Muse doesn’t give me gifts like this very often–he’s usually kind of surly and difficult–but when he does, there’s not much else I can do, but go with it.

Suspenseful Seven Sentence Sunday
Good morning all. It’s time for another suspense seven sentence Sunday. Today’s excerpt comes from my WIP, The Devil’s Eye. Also, remember to check out the other participating suspense writers.
With wide, staring eyes, her gaze travelled the length of the massive shadow, from the hem of a long coat, to wide masculine shoulders to the outline of a fedora hat.
A man. There was a man in her room!
A scream burned up the back of her throat and lodged there. She couldn’t move or speak. She could scarcely breathe.
Instead, she stared into the black void where a face should have been, unable to see a single feature, then, like tiny beacons from hell, two red eyes appeared.

The Right Man For The Job
So now that I’m taking my own advice, I’m hard at work once more on The Devil’s Eye. As I was reading through what I’d written so far, I found I liked the story for the most part. The setting, while challenging, works well with the external conflict. The heroine’s internal conflict was being challenged by all the characters except one. The hero. In fact, he just wasn’t fitting into the story at all.
This was more than a little annoying for me. I liked him, but the chemistry I imagined between he and the heroine just wasn’t working. Actually he had better chemistry with another character in the story which got me thinking… But enough about that for now. All along I was also dealing with the issue that his involvement in the story at the same time as the heroine’s was simply too big of a coincidence. I had the wrong man for the job.
Then another character popped into my head practically fully formed. He fit into the story like a missing jigsaw piece. I’m having go through and rework scenes to suit him, but already the chemistry between him and my heroine is better. Such a relief.
